About the Artist

Rachel MaKarrall is happiest combining her education as a biologist with her lifelong penchant for creating art. Although she enjoys rendering a wide array of natural subjects, she is especially fascinated by insects.

In her ongoing Insect Portrait Series, Rachel uses detailed realism and up-close scientific accuracy to showcase the exquisite beauty of these often under-appreciated creatures. She enjoys working from nontraditional angles and using a variety of media including watercolor, ink, carbon dust and colored pencil. A largely self-taught artist and Wisconsin native, Rachel is a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, the Michigan Entomological Society, and the Entomological Society of America. She currently lives in Ann Arbor.

Her Art

Framed, limited edition prints from Rachel's Insect Portrait Series are available for purchase at Motte & Bailey Booksellers. Prints are made using high-resolution digital scans of the original, and printed onto archival quality semi-gloss paper using archival quality colored inks. The particular ink/paper combination used for this series is rated at over 100 years lightfastness under normal display conditions. Prints are hand-numbered, titled, and signed by the artist, and framed using acid-free materials and archival methods, in which no adhesive touches the print itself. A short natural history of the species depicted is attached to the backing of each frame.
