A warm biography of a leading lady in California from the 1880s to the 1930s, who with her husband founded Stanford University after the death of their son. Her husband was one of the Founders of the Central Pacific Railroad company, governor of And US Sentor for California. As president of the Central pacific he hammered in the golden spike which linked east and west by rail in 1869. Mrs. Stanford died by under odd circumstances in Oahu, which Berner deals with but briefly

A solid collection of shorter (1-12 pages), more philosophical pieces by Douglas, who was also appointed to the Supreme Court by FDR in 1939. He was the longest serving Justice, over 36 years, and a fierce defender of individual rights. A very uncommon book.
