Octavo. Brown pebbled cloth with gilt lettering to front board and spine. Only slightly ex-library with an attractive library Civil War collection bookplate on front pastedown endpaper and another stamp with less but similar information on title page and last endpaper. Blocked in black at edges. Wear to edges and corners. Small tear in cloth at head of spine. Chipping at head and heel of spine. Slight scuffing to covers. Articles about Him, his widow, and the book pasted in the front two endpapers. 277 p. w/illustrations. The favorable and not always accurate biography of this Irish author and adventurer by his wife. Reid came to the US in 1840 via New Orleans, traveled, traded and hunted along the Missouri and Platte Rivers, eventually living in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, then New York. He joined the First New York Volunteer Infantry for the Mexican American War, was wounded at Chapultepec and promoted to First Lieutenant. He was discharged and began writing plays and Boys' novels based on his experiences with indians, exploration, and war which influenced readers as different as Theodore Roosevelt and Vladimir Nabokov. He married Elizabeth, daughter of an English artistocrat in 1853. He declared bankruptcy after freely spending his fortune in 1866, and moved to England 1870. he struggled to make ends meet until his death in 1883.
