A memoir of the World War One years by an important field and administrative officer in its planning and execution, at home and abroad. He began the war by commanding the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, then was promoted to artillery of the First US Army and other artillery units not attached to divisions. He was recalled and made Army Chief in early 1918. he was notable for being Critical of the Army's Siberian intervention, clashing with Pershing, and of expanding the Army's technical services.
