Journals of Ralph Waldo Emerson 10 vols. 1820-1876

Cambridge, MA: Riverside Press, 1909. Limited large paper edition. Leather Bound Hardcover. 10 volumes complete, octavos. 3 quarter brown morocco leather with 5 raised bands, gilt titles and designs in spine compartments, and lively light green marbled paper on boards and endpapers. Top edges gilt. Slight suning to spines, and light scuffing to leather on some volumes. Very short tear at bottom of limitation page on v. 1. Many pages unopened. All volumes hand numbered 130 of 600 copies, though this set is NOT signed by publisher Houghton Mifflin. Includes a number of illustrations reproducing entries and drawings from the Journal. This set also includes a pasted in actual short manuscript letter written and signed by Emerson to Willaim Rope Jr, in October 1844 confirming a visit to him later in December of that year. In vol. 2, a second written piece on a blue page is pasted in, a brief piece from Southey's LIfe of Nelson copied in Emerson's cursive hand, though incorrectly and perhaps from memory " ...officers Choose yourself my lord / he replied the whole profession is / animated by one spirit you / cannot choose wrong". An attractive and beautifully printed edition of Emerson's Journals, on lovely paper. Very good. Item #18569
