America, often at odds with his rival, Edward D. Cope, sometimes bribing workers to get theother's fossils. Their rivalry was called the Bone Wars. Eugene Woldemar Hilgard was a highly regarded a major late 19th c. US geologist and a professor of soil resources (pedology), often working in the areas of mineralogy, geology, zoology, and botany.
