Of special note: SIGNED and inscribed by Marsh to Prof. E. M. Hilgard "with the kindest regards" front cover. Marsh was one of the 2 greatest paleontologists in 19th C. America, often at odds with his rival, Edward D. Cope, sometimes bribing workers to get the other's fossils. Their rivalry was called the Bone Wars. Eugene Woldemar Hilgard was a highly regarded a major late 19th c. US geologist and a professor of soil resources (pedology), often working in the areas of mineralogy, geology, zoology, and botany.
