Images lightly burned onto opposite blank pages. Name of former owner, likely Susan Wade Peabody, PhD in Political science in Chicago, 1908, on flyleaf. Card of Mrs. Henry C, Barlow of Oak Park tipped in, with inscription on the card "Nell, A Happy New / Year With / Much Love". Henry Barlow was likely the traffic director of the Chicago Association of Commerce, as the dates and location match. Mary Moulton Cheney [1871 – 1957] was an artist and designer associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, and in 1902 opened the The Chemith Press with May Marsh Smith, forming one of the first all woman private press presses in the United States, making books, pamphlets, and bookplates. The Bay Tree motif throughout the work was an important symbol for Cheney, honoring the work of women. Includes gilt letters and gilt Christian motifs throughout. An uncommon fine press work.
