London The Holland Press 1961 Reprint of an original 1910 work. Two large quarto (oversized) volumes in green cloth, with gilt lettering to spine. Larger in size than other reprints. Light wear to edges and corners of boards. Corners lightly bumped, more so on vol. 2. Slight soiling to edges of textblock. Vol. 1 (12) 600 p. (411 entries). Vol. 2 601-1096 (289 entries) with additional notes, and an index of 69 pgs (lxix). Both volumes include numerous illustrations of title pages, incipits, interior plates, and bindings in b&w. An attractive, larger sized reprint of this important and thorough catalog. Murray (1849 - 1919) was an English art connoiseur, consultant and dealer, as well as being a respected portraitist. His friends included Rosetti, Burne-Jones, William Morris, and Ruskin. His book collection and manuscript collection, put together in just 7 years, began when he retired from art and sold most of the paintings. His collection was sold over a period of 8 years before and after his death, with a good number of the French books being sold in an auction the year before his death. Others were sold privately.
