This book about a racoon who adopts a human girl is illustrated by noted artist Evaline Ness, former wife of Elliot Ness of Untouchables fame, and was done just as she entered her most successful and productive period. She had done the cover of ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS in 1960, and her work was a runner up for the Caldecott Medal each year from 1964-66. She won the medal in 1967 for her own book SAM, BANGS AND MOONSHINE. She also did the front and back covers and maps for Alexander's PRYDAIN series, as well as illustrating two of the books.
