Man a Machine and Man a Plant
de la Metrie, Julien Offray. translated by Richard A. Watson and Maya Rybalka. introduction and notes by Justin Leiber

Indianapolis Hackett Publishing Company 1994 First printing of this edition Thin octavo (standard size). Slight wear to edges and corners of boards. 92 p. Two short but important works by this French doctor and philosopher (1709 - 51), and one the first materialists. He argues, building on Descartes, that like animals man is a machine, controlled by the brain, and thinks that there is a continuity between animals and plants. His works were burbed in France and Holland, but he found a safe haven with Frederick the Great until his death. Very good Hardcover (Item ID: 17266)
