Ortuinus von Deventer. Dr. Ernest Münch, editor

Leipzig Libraria F. [ Friedrich ] Nicolai 1827 First edition thus Octavo (standard size). Leatherbound, light brown, with crosshatched design to boards, gilt ruling to boards, gilt titling and designs to spine. Slight wear to edges and corners of boards. vi [ 2 ], 554 p. A collection of satrical letters from humanists that first appeared in 1515-1519. The letters support Johann Reuchlin regarding the importance and protection of Jewish books, and pretend to be from fanatical Christians arging all Jewish books should be burned. In particular, Deventer (called Ortwin in English), who sided against Reuchlin, had his career and influence effectively ended by the letters, which effectively attacked his morality, scholarship, and sobriety. Very good leatherbound (Item ID: 17994)
