The Ghost in the Tower: An Episode in Jacobia.

Chicago: Privately printed and bound by Tony Rubovits, 1921. Hardcover. First edition. Good quarto hardcover in grey binding without dust jacket. Wear and rubbing along the edges of the boards with places where the binding is worn away or slightly torn, mainly on the fore-edges of the panels, with bumping to the head and heel of the spine and on the corners of the panels. The covers are scuffed and have some soiling. Slight roll to the spine. Pages are a little bit browned. The binding is a little weak in some spots but all pages are still firmly attached. Gift inscription by one "H. W. Jacobs Chicago 1923" to his friend Frank B. Niles on the front free endpaper. Henry Jacobs was the owner of the haunted farm in this account (see the postscript). 62 pages with illustrations by Reed. The ghost in question is the shade of the Hungarian Emric Szapolyai, a general of King Mathias Corvinus. Dying in 1489, the ghost travelled to the Mediterranean, falling in with Christian and Turkish Pirates, then to the new world where he sailed with Morgan and Blackbeard. Eventually he wound up in New York, where he met the ghosts of Kidd and several robber barons, and finally boarded a train bound for Michigan, ending his journeys in the hospitable tower in the title. A scarce work of fiction by the noted Chicago architect and writer Earl H. Reed, using a friend's property as the setting. Good. Item #13375
