Epistolae Obscurorum Virorum Aliaque Aevi Decimi Sexti Monimenta Rarissima. Die Briefe Der Finsterlinge an Magister Ortuinus Von Deventer, Nebst andern sehr Seltenen Beiträgen zur Litteratur-, Sitten- und Kirchengeschichte des Sechzehnten Jahrhunderts

Leipzig: Libraria F. [ Friedrich ] Nicolai, 1827. First edition thus. leatherbound. Octavo (standard size). Leatherbound, light brown, with crosshatched design to boards, gilt ruling to boards, gilt titling and designs to spine. Slight wear to edges and corners of boards. vi [ 2 ], 554 p. A collection of satirical letters from humanists that first appeared in 1515-1519. The letters support Johann Reuchlin regarding the importance and protection of Jewish books, and pretend to be from fanatical Christians arguing all Jewish books should be burned. In particular, Deventer (called Ortwin in English), who sided against Reuchlin, had his career and influence effectively ended by the letters, which attacked his morality, scholarship, and sobriety. Very good. Item #17994
